About Us

My name is Richard A. Sanchez. I was appointed Chief of Police for the City of Wapato in May of 2005. I am from San Diego, California. I served with the University Of California Police Department for 29 years in San Diego, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles.  I am a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

The Wapato Police Department has staff of 24:  13 Sworn Officers, 7 Certified Correctional Officers, and 4 Civilian Clerks.  There are also 3 Police Reserve Officers who work in the Patrol Division.  The Department provides the Community of Wapato (4600) with 24-hour Police Services.  The Officers are dispatched to calls by the Yakima County Sheriff Dispatch Center.  Our jail houses 54 inmates, both local and out of county inmates.

The Police Department is continuing to develop programs that will help educate the community about Laws, Crime Prevention, Crime Reporting and Self Protection.  This has been addressed through the Community Academy, Driver’s License Academy, and Explore Program.  In 2007, we are hoping to institute a Citizen Patrol and Block Watch.
