Wapato City Jail
The Wapato City Jail is a historical monument within itself. The building was erected in 1908, and the jail was built a short time later. Rumor has it that it was built during the same year.
In 1963, or shortly thereafter, the jail doubled in size. This brought the total inmates housed to 44. In 1997, we added another 4 beds to the female cell allowing us to house ten females.
In 2000, we changed the eating arraignments in the jail allowing the inmates to eat in their housing units opening up another housing area. We then added eight beds in that housing area which brings our total capacity to 56 inmates (46 male -10 female). By doing this we were able to rent jail beds to small agencies that cannot afford the high cost of the county jails.
In 2005, we started a work crew within the city known as the KWAC (Keeping Wapato Clean) program. This is a crew made up of 6 to 10 inmates who go around the city painting out graffiti, pulling weeds, and whatever else needs to be done. This has grown into a program utilized by contracting agencies whom have their inmates housed in the Wapato City Jail. Each local agency that we contract with will come and get at least three of their own inmates and put them to work in their cities. It's a win/win situation; the inmates get out to work, and the cities get cleaned.
The Wapato City Jail is operated by one Sergeant, one Corporal, and five Correction Officers: Sergeant Bruce Benscoter, Corporal Jose Valencia, and Correction Officers Mike Guinn, Andreas Eismann, and Brian Dean (not in photo).
